Designed to fit onto new or existing staircases where the old newel post is being replaced
Please note, we only list Pine and Oak currently on the website. Please contact us direct regarding Hemlock, White Primed, Ash and Sapele stair parts.
Use the drop down boxes above to select the length and timber of the newel base you want
The newel bases come in two types, full newel base and half newel base. The Full Base can used with any Newel Posts that has a 50mm spigot dowel. The Newel Bases come pre-drilled in the top to accept 50mm spigot dowel newel posts
Use a strong adhesive such as Joiners mate to glue the Newel Post to the Newel Base together and for an even stronger joint we recommend screwing through the newel base and into the spigot dowel of the newel post. Counter sink and screws so that they can be plugged or filled hiding them from view
Newel bases are supplied in two designs, each with it specific purpose on a staircase
The full 90mm x 90mm Full Newel base. This is the most commonly used base on most stair configurations. It is designed for the bottom of the stair case, top of the staircase, intermediate posts and used as mid posts and corner posts on a landing.
The 90mm Half Newel base. Used up against a wall to finish the handrail run. This base is fixed by screwing and gluing it directly to the wall using suitable fixings.
Fitting Colonial Newel Posts
Newel bases and Posts are fitted first followed by base rails and handrails.
Remember that the handrail height needs to be 900mm.
The newel base at the bottom of the stairs is housed over the stair string (the side of the staircase) and fixed into position fixing through the side of the post and through the string using tapered dowels or suitable wood screws. Screws should be countersunk into the timber so they can be plugged or filled to match the timber
Top posts and landing posts are fixed using a lap joint to the joist under the floorboards at the top of the stairs and secured using suitable wood screws. Remember to always drill pilot holes into hardwoods.
You can use Zip Fix UT Newel Post fasteners if you prefer. These secure the post to concrete or timber sub floors
Half newel posts are glued and screwed directly to the wall.
We recommend laying out your stair components to ensure handrail heights are 900mm before you cut any existing newel posts
Handrail heights on the staircase are measured from the front bullnose of a step to the top of the handrail.
Spindles must not allow a sphere 100mm in diameter to pass between two spindles
